Yoga Too?

Lately my brain has been flitting from one idea to another. I think it's because today is Black Friday in my association; when I get to process thousands of dollars and hundreds of registrations to our annual conference. It's relatively brainless work, so my mind wanders. And lately it's been wandering around my health. I've been drawn to yoga this past week. Not sure why. It could have something to do with how busy and stressful work has been, which is reaching fever pitch as the time before launch shrinks. It could have to do with my general wanting-to-be-healthier feelings that ebb and flow (and right now are flowing). And then last weekend when I was playing around in Pinterest I clicked on a random pin and clicked through to the webpage and clicked on a random link - and ended up watching a keynote speech from the Fertility Planit show in LA.

Realistically, it didn't hold any magic solution or insight, and I don't believe it will cure our problem with infertility, but it did make me start thinking about yoga again as just a healthy lifestyle. I also had never heard of Tara Stiles, and I like her approach - and the fact that she has a million videos on YouTube so I can start slow with 5-10 minute flows. I think it would be easy to discount yoga for fertility as a crock, and not bother, but I can't make decisions based only on my uterus and not think about the rest of my self.

I did yoga several years ago, for almost a year, and it was great fun. But I only did my one-hour-once-a-week thing and the rest of my life was business as usual (so I guess the yoga center was like my church, and I was a bad parishioner). I didn't eat any differently, I didn't feel any differently... I was pretty proud about getting into a full downward dog though. But I realized at some point (probably after I stopped going to the studio) that once a week was not the way it needs to happen.

So I've started easing myself back into yoga, in my bedroom for 10 minutes a night. And hopefully in a few months, after work dies down, I'll be able to start going to the studio again.

  1. Keep with it. :-) With our first child, I almost had a miscarriage...so, did not get to exercise as much as I would have liked. So far, I have not experienced any health issues that are not part of my everyday with this pregnancy...so, my mind is often going to prenatal workouts. When you are able to conceive, you will be so healthy and that is definitely a good way to be before pregnancy. Hugs.

    1. That's what I'm going for - being healthy in general, which will hopefully lead to an easy and happy pregnancy. And also I like the idea of being able to stick with it through pregnancy. I liked Tara's quote in the video about how sometimes she'll get notes from some of her clients saying "I'm sorry I missed class; I went into labor" - I'd love it for yoga to be like that for me.

  2. I used to go to a yoga class every Friday at 430 - it was a fantastic way to relax and let go of the work week. With my current job, I can't get to any classes and I miss it! I wish I could start back, but my gym only has mid-afternoon and late-evening classes, neither of which work for our schedule.

    1. That's frustrating! I have tried doing yoga at home but it's just not the same - I'm always worrying about the laundry or trying to hold poses while my kitten bites my feet. It's nice to do yoga in a space that's totally outside of home. I still try to stick with home flows since I can't get to a studio quite yet - I've been doing 10 minutes right before bed and it's really nice.

      Do you only have one place in town that offers yoga, or do you stick with your gym since you have a membership?

  4. Hello! Im over from ICLW! I watched a few of those podcasts as well! I have tried meditating, but I find it so hard to do. It definitely takes practice! I should try yoga- I never have!

  7. Hi Megan! Reading your post made me want to get back into yoga. I was never good at it, but I always liked how it made me feel. I agree that it is great for the body and soul. It is fantastic that you are easing back into it!

    1. Hi there! I'm not good at it either. It's kind of comical, I imagine, watching me stumble through beginner flows while watching a ballet-dancer-turned-yoga-teacher be so graceful. But it feels good and that's that's important!

  8. Several years ago, like you, I took a weekly yoga class. I liked it, but didn't continue with it. The gym I went to did have classes, but I didn't always make it to them and now I'm not a member of the gym. I like yoga, but I've never taken it as a lifestyle. The stretches/movements were enough for me.
    I hope you find time to get back into it!

  9. I took some yoga classes a few years ago and I really enjoyed them. I have been thinking about getting back into it lately and reading you say you do it just for 10 minutes gave me the kick in the hide I needed to do it. Thank you!

  10. I've never tried yoga because I'm a cardio junkie. But I didn't know you could do it for only 10 minutes. Maybe I'll give it a try at home.

    1. Well, you likely won't get fantastic physical results just from spending 10 minutes at a time with it, but it's a good way to get started and a good way to refocus your brain after a long day (or at the beginning of a long day!).
